Community Hero: Maxine Plesiuk, Regional Admin

Maxine helped kick off her region of Carman, Manitoba with a bang, enthusiastically rallying local players to join the site. With only one court in the entire region, organizing play schedules was a must! Rather than randomly dropping in to find either a huge crowd or no one to play with, players sign up in groups of 8 on PTS to ensure maximum fun. We asked Maxine a few questions about her experience.

How long have you been playing pickleball and where did you learn to play?

I have been playing pickleball since January of 2023, so just some sixteen months! I learned to play at the Carman Active Living Centre (ALC) in Carman, Manitoba. I had just retired and was curious about the game! My teachers were two amazing seniors who always have time for those who want to learn the game - they are a gift to the community!

How would you describe your local pickleball community?

Our local pickleball community is comprised mainly of seniors although our Active Living Centre is open to those of all ages. The group has grown significantly over the last year and is to the point where we are a reliable and consistent source of revenue for the ALC. It is great to have such a fabulous venue to play in year-round. An outdoor court is also available for play.

What is your favorite thing about the sport?

I love pickleball for the exercise and the camaraderie of the sport! We have so much fun playing together and teaching others. There is also a lot of laughing involved. The best part is watching beginners blossom into competitive players and sharing knowledge with others. It's also great watching seniors in their 80s continuing to enjoy the game at a competitive level.

What advice would you give to a new region considering setting up PlayTime Scheduler?

Just do it! Before PlayTime Scheduler, we were a mess of emails going back and forth with no one knowing for certain who would be playing on any given day, and often players showed up to find no one there, which was extremely frustrating. With PlayTime Scheduler, we know exactly who is playing and when. It does a superb job of keeping us organized, and we couldn't live without it now. It is our primary communication tool, and we are extremely grateful to PTS for allowing us to participate! If you are ever in the Carman, Manitoba area, look us up on PlayTime Scheduler and come out and join us! We would love to see you on the court!
