Pickleball For Dummies: Improving While Playing Up or Down in Skill Level
Most people would agree that playing with others of similar skill level leads to the most fun and competitive pickleball. That's perfectly understandable. However, forming a perfect foursome isn't always possible. Maybe you go out of your way to avoid playing with lesser-skilled players or feel too intimidated to play with higher-skilled players. However, mixing skill levels provides more opportunities to improve than you may think.
If you're playing with opponents who are significantly below your own skill level, try playing counterintuitively. Emphasize your weaknesses instead of your strengths. Remember to be kind as you play with lesser-skilled players. Keep in mind that they are most likely intimidated by playing with a more advanced player.
Playing with higher-skilled players can induce nerves or feelings of inferiority and cause you to play much worse than you normally do, which only exacerbates your negative emotions. If you're nervous, try to focus on keeping the ball low and in play. Don't show off or make risky moves - advanced players will be waiting to pounce on any mistakes. A patient, steady partner is appreciated at all levels of play.
Don't expect higher-level players to give you free coaching during recreational play. Although many advanced players do enjoy helping others, they are not obligated to play with, or coach, everyone who asks.
Here are some more ways to hone your craft while having fun with players of mixed skill levels:
- Work on your dinking.
- Ask the other team to hit the ball hard so that you can practice blocking and resets.
- Serve to specific targets.
- Practice adding spin to your shots.
- Stand on one foot, close one eye, and switch your paddle to your other hand.
(Just kidding - don't do that!) - Practice slowing down the game with soft shots.
- Nail those third-shot drops and drives.
Most important, playing with people of different skill levels provides an opportunity to practice compassion. We were all beginners once. It's a beautiful thing to see experienced players enthusiastically help new players learn the ins and outs. Pickleball for all! (We'll work on world peace next.)
