Community Hero: Michael Reid, Regional Admin

This month we’re featuring Michael Reid, regional admin of the pickleball community in Wilmerding, PA.

How long have you been playing pickleball and where did you learn to play?

I have been playing pickleball for about three years. I learned to play at the Allegheny Valley YMCA in Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania. The fact that I've played tennis, racket ball and table tennis enabled me to pickup the sport quickly.

How would you describe your local pickleball community?

I play pickleball both indoors and outdoors. The people vary in skill level from beginners, to intermediate, to advanced. I only play mixed doubles. The community continues to grow.

What is your favorite thing about the sport?

Pickleball is a sport that can be played by all ages. I used to play tennis for enjoyment and exercise. I have bilateral ulnar neuropathy in both hands, eliminating me from playing tennis. Pickleball is my substitution. The sport allows me enjoyment, competition, exercise, and friendship. The sport is growing each and every day. It's addicting!

What advice would you give to a new region considering setting up PlayTime Scheduler?

Make sure to open up your region to players of all levels. Run a clinic to determine skill level of all players. Set up sessions with combined skill levels. Make sure it's competitive and fun.
