The journey of MilesJane began when Andrew and Kara English immersed themselves in the world of pickleball, a shared passion they discovered in May of 2023. "At first, like many other tennis players, I had zero interest in stepping onto a pickleball court," said Andrew. "With a lot of encouragement (ahem … pushing), my wife finally convinced me to try it one evening. The game itself was so much more physical and mental than I had expected. The people though, really made it an experience."

"We have four children, all under the age of 11-years and it can be difficult to find activities that everyone enjoys together," said Kara. "Pickleball really is a sport that anyone of any age can enjoy. The number of families we see playing together on the courts is quite a sight to witness."

Andrew is a psychologist by background, while Kara worked in fashion and textiles. "I’d look around and I noticed that 99% of players were wearing hats," said Andrew. "But they were all quite uninspiring, poor quality, or boring. At best cheesy. We thought, why don’t we make pickleball hats. High quality, thoughtfully designed, and unique." Kara's expertise in fashion and textiles seemed like an excellent match for their mission.

Apart from their impressive hat designs, what truly distinguishes MilesJane is their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on their local community in Alameda, California. Even before they began selling hats, they dedicated one weekend every month to preparing meals for the homeless population in the Bay Area. Their mobile grilling station would be stationed at temporary housing locations and homeless encampments in the East Bay, a program referred to as the Mobile Meals Program. So far, they've entirely financed this program themselves, but they aspire to change that in the near future, with hopes of expanding its reach. Central to their Mobile Meals Program is the fact that each purchase of a MilesJane hat directly contributes to the program that supports this less fortunate population.
